I’m Dale Metcalfe. I’m the Waste, Recycling and Enforcement Manager here at Middlesbrough Council, and I oversee the day-to-day operations for waste collection services, paid-for services and the enforcement arm of the organisation.

We used to experience a wide range of issues, predominantly around health and safety, as well as vehicle compliance.

I recently attended an event where I was shown the Live Lane technology, which uses AI functionality on the front nearside of the vehicle to detect moving traffic.

We absolutely welcome this technology, particularly when operatives are working at the rear of refuse collection vehicles on the highway.

When technology is installed on any of our vehicles, whether a van or a truck, it is usually managed through the procurement process, which is extremely helpful.

When a vehicle is delivered to us, the technology is already installed, configured and ready to use from day one.

We are kept up to date by the project manager and everyone involved throughout the process. There is a clear timeline from start to finish, so we know what technology will be installed, where and how it will be fitted, and when the work will be completed.
