We’re here today in Cardiff, where we’re talking with Depot and Infrastructure Manager Matthew Long and Neighbourhood Services Manager Lauren Bodman at Cardiff Council about their seamless switch to Fleetclear.
Hi, my name is Matthew Long. I’m the Depot and Infrastructure Manager for Frontline Services at Cardiff Council.
I’m the manager who provides the supporting elements for our frontline services. Effectively, I make sure the provisions at the depot are available, including vehicle maintenance and vehicle tipping. It’s quite a varied role, but essentially it’s about supporting what the frontline services teams need to get the job done.
I think the only vehicle-related technology we previously had for things such as accident investigations and identifying where a vehicle was located was a basic tracker.
It involved a handful of supervisors going out on a daily basis to monitor crews, which was very difficult to manage. Having CCTV on the vehicles to capture events as they happened was therefore key. It was a major breakthrough in managing health and safety.
Hi, I’m Lauren Bodman. I’m the Neighbourhood Services Manager for Cardiff Council, managing all of the street cleansing and waste enforcement teams within the Frontline Services directorate.
In terms of driver safety, we have our policies and processes in place and align with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 when our teams are carrying out their duties.
The importance of having 360-degree cameras is not only about protecting our operatives and ensuring their health, safety and wellbeing remain paramount. It is also about protecting members of the public.
A couple of us effectively adopted the camera technology across the vehicles, and it has grown from there.
For us, it was brilliant that Fleetclear was already working with many local authorities throughout England, Wales and Scotland. We could discuss their experiences, particularly when implementing systems across a fleet.
There is always some apprehension among employees working on the vehicles that the technology is being used to spy on them, but that was not what it was about.
It was more about reactive monitoring when incidents occurred, helping to prevent them from happening again and identifying whether additional control measures could be introduced.
If something had gone wrong, or if there had been a claim from a member of the public, we could also determine whether there was any liability on our part or theirs.
That has been my experience with the technology. Moving forward, I would like to continue building those relationships and work with Fleetclear to explore what more we can achieve in the future.
We now have live cameras on the vehicles, giving us the ability to view footage remotely if an event is taking place at the time.
Another benefit of CCTV is that the information can be fed into training programmes, helping us continually monitor and improve driver behaviour.
We have definitely come a long way in terms of managing drivers and working with Fleetclear to reach where we are now with Fleetclear Connect, including linking vehicle tracking into the system.
We can now search by area. More excitingly, we are looking at how AI systems could bring further safety improvements to our transfer station.
The industry has a significant problem with reversing refuse vehicles. Reverse radars are now fitted to all of our trucks because of that issue.
They’re one step ahead.
