Fleetclear Shortlisted for Innovation Award at the Motor Transport Awards 2026

The shortlisting in the Innovation Award category recognises the development of Live Lane, Fleetclear’s AI-powered safety solution designed to help protect staff working alongside live traffic. Developed in partnership with Serco, Live Lane was designed to address a real operational challenge faced by frontline crews: the risk of collision between operatives working alongside station vehicles and live traffic passing in close proximity. The solution was originally focused on waste collection teams carrying out their rounds but has been embraced by a number of industries facing similar risks.
How Live Lane's AI technology protects roadside workers
Live Lane uses externally mounted wide-angle AI cameras to detect approaching vehicles in the adjacent live lane. When a potential hazard is identified, warning lights at the rear of the vehicle alert operatives before they step into danger, giving crews greater awareness and helping to reduce the risk of collisions or near misses.

The Live Lane reflects Fleetclear’s commitment to developing practical, field-tested technology that improves safety, efficiency and confidence across fleet operations. Our collaborative approach with Serco’s frontline teams enabled the system to meet the needs of real-world working conditions, ensuring the technology supports crews where it matters most.
Steve Heywood MBE CMILT, Serco Fleet Director said, “We are delighted to have worked collaboratively with Fleetclear to develop this product. With the other systems on the market, the onus is on the car driver to react to any warnings, however with LLIS the AI technology offers increased situational awareness to frontlines teams when working in live lanes.”
“Fleetclear are delighted to have been shortlisted for the Innovation category at this years Motor Transport Awards, our Live Lane system was developed in conjunction with Serco and uses AI to reduce the collision risk to operatives from passing traffic while working at the rear of the vehicle. Fleetclear and Serco have worked collaboratively to apply AI technology to a real-world issue facing all refuse vehicle operators and collect data to help operators make informed safety improvements.”
